"The WAEA Art Teacher of the Month is Angie Hemker from West Salem! Angie graduated from Viterbo University in 1997 with a degree in Art Education. In 2001, I graduated from UWL with a Masters in Education-Professional Development. She started her teaching career at Northern Hills Elementary in the fall of 1997, the following year (1998) she taught in both Onalaska (in the morning) AND West Salem (in the afternoon)! She has been in room 226 at West Salem Elementary School ever since. She is also a proud parent of students who have attended all 3 schools in the West Salem School district.
Her colleague describes her as an anchor for the West Salem Art Department, adding that she is a steadfast supporter and champion for Arts Education in the West Salem area and in the state of Wisconsin. She has created a community network of art educators by befriending and supporting teachers in the surrounding area and beyond and also is a practicing artist who makes and sells her wares in the area and online. She is committed to excellence and has been a huge inspiration for countless student teachers and colleagues.
Angie says, "For me the best part of teaching is not necessarily when I am demonstrating or giving an art history lesson, although I do love that part. For me the BEST PART is when you can take a step back and watch and listen and observe all of the things that kids can do, perform, create and problem solve. This is when you know that your work has meaning and value, watching students find success putting what you have taught them into visible action."
Congratulations, Angie! We are lucky to have you in Wisconsin!"
