2017 Calendar Survey

West Salem School District Parents/Guardians –
In the fall of 2014 the district conducted a survey of parents and employees to gather input regarding the creation of the school calendar. The survey data included 558 responses. The district used the data to assist in creating the 2016 – 2017 and 2017 – 2018 school calendars.
The 2016 – 2017 and 2017 – 2018 school calendars include a number of significant changes when compared to previous calendars. The changes directly connected to the 2014 survey data include:
1. The scheduling of two fewer full days with students in exchange for two additional full days of staff development. This option was preferred over the former practice of holding an early release day every month.
2. The scheduling of non-school days in late October and late March to accommodate parent-teacher conferences. This was in response to teacher requests to have shorter weeks during conferences.
3. The limiting of Easter break to include only Good Friday and Monday. This was in response to questions about spring break and “snow-day” make up days connected to the Easter break.
4. The extending of the Thanksgiving break to include the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This was a request connected to holiday travel.
The 2014 survey data also included a number of parent comments about the possibility of creating an option of year round school for those who are interested. This sparked some conversation and the inclusion of a new question in 2017 to seek further input.
The 2017 calendar survey seeks your input regarding these changes and others connected to the development of the 2018 – 2019 and 2019 – 2020 school calendars.
