The regional Mathcounts competition was held on Friday, February 6th in La Crosse.  There were 24 competitors representing three different schools. 

    The team results were as follows:  3rd place – Viroqua Middle School, 2nd place – West Salem Middle School, and 1st place – Holmen Middle School.  West Salem’s team consisted of Andrew Murphy, Ian Knudson, Aaron Bahr and Kendra Ames.    

    The individual results were as follows:  10th place – Ashlyn Arneson (West Salem), 9th place – Olivia Thew (Viroqua), 8th place – Walter Leifeld (Holmen), 7th place – Aaron Bahr (West Salem), 6th place – Trygve Lebakken (West Salem), 5th place – Sam Saner (Viroqua), 4th place – Ian Knudson (West Salem), 3rd place – Zeke Fredricks (Holmen), 2nd place – Andrew Murphy (West Salem), and 1st place – Zeke Wettstein (Holmen).  Kendra Ames finished in 22nd place.  Also competing for West Salem was Dani Miller in 13th  place, Garrett Lord in 16th place, Ryan Schlimgen in 17th place, and Laura Burdick in 19th place. 

        Mathcounts is a national program designed to promote excellence in math and science in grades 6-8.  Mathcounts allows students to improve their problem solving skills as individuals, as well as, in teams of four.  West Salem’s coaches are Tammy Bentzen and Jon Jones.

    West Salem’s Murphy, Knudson, and Lebakken now advance to the State competition in Madison on Saturday, March 7th.
