West Salem High School Hosts SkillsUSA

Congratulations to all District 6 SkillsUSA Participants

The West Salem High School hosted the District 6 SkillsUSA Competition Tuesday night. About 100 students, from eight different schools, attended the event. Students participated in competitions such as welding, culinary, automotive and interviewing. 

SkillsUSA is "a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce," according to its website. 

Paul Liethen, West Salem technology teacher, led the event. Liethen stressed the importance of trade skills in the job market and economy, saying that "Tradesmen, like carpenters, plumbers, electricians, construction folks...all over, there are those jobs."

Winners were awarded prizes such as cookware and tool sets. Congratulations to the following students from West Salem High School who placed in the top three:

  • Riley Miller - 1st place, Diesel
  • Leah Galsted & Lily Smith - 1st place, Culinary Arts
  • Jared Novak - 2nd place, Automotive
  • Ryan Rasmussan & Jacob Iverson - 2nd place, Robotics
  • Hunter Young - 3rd place, Cabinetmaking

A big thanks to Mr. Liethen, Mr. Baker, Mrs. Haas, Mr. Mathison, Mr. Holter and Miss Hesselberg for helping with the event.
