While the West Salem High School Dance Team’s primary purpose is to serve as a support group for the school's interscholastic athletic program, the team also competes at the local and state level.

In addition to performing at home football games, and girls’ and boys’ basketball games, the team competes in the Wisconsin State Dance Championships each January. The Western Regional is held at New Richmond High School. Competition is fierce and teams scoring at the top of their divisions in pom, jazz, kick, and hip hop earn a bid to the state competition which is held at the La Crosse Center.

Try-out for the WSHS Dance Team are held each May for the upcoming school year. Students may try out for the fall team, winter team, or both teams. During try-outs, applicants learn a one minute routine, are given time to practice, and then try-out for a panel of judges. In addition to the routine, students must demonstrate skills in leaps, jumps, turns, kicks, toe-touches, and splits.

Students of all ability levels are encouraged to try out for the team.

Practices begin at the end of July/beginning of August. During the school year, the team practices daily after school and on some Saturdays.
